marriage advice

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The honeymoon stage, marital bliss and newlyweds are all words to describe you and your first year of marriage. While the words conjure up images of simplicity, passion and possibly choirs singing in the background, the truth about the first year of marriage comes as quite a shock to many “lovebirds.” According to information collected by the US Census Bureau, the median age of a woman at their first divorce is 29, for men it is 30.5. The Bureau also reports that the average number of years a marriage lasts in the United States is 7.8.

This by no means is meant to suggest that your marriage is doomed. But, many couples are not prepared for what is in store for them. When people are young, they have the illusion that the love they share with their husband or wife is stronger than the love of couples who have come before them. But, regardless of how strong you feel your love is, marriage still takes work.

Here is what you can expect in your first year of marriage, and advice for how you can keep your bond strong.

Expect change: Natural changes always happen in any relationship. It is just a matter of being prepared for them. For example, if you have never lived with your spouse prior to being married, then you might discover new things about him that you are unaccustomed to. Does he leave his clothes on the floor, or dishes in the sink? These are just small nuisances to expect. But these minor annoyances can be dealt with quickly as long as you make an effort to bring them up in a calm and noncritical way.

There may also be emotional changes as well. Now that you are no longer in the courting stage of your relationship, you may find that your partner is less vocal about his admiration for you. It doesn’t mean that he loves you any less, but perhaps he expects that you know already how much he cares for you. Often couples in counseling discuss their love languages to discover the many ways that they both express love, and how they prefer to receive love.

Work on communication skills: It is stressed to couples that communication is key to creating a strong marriage. But, communication is about more than expressing all of your feelings. You should also work on your communication style:
Watch your tone of voice
Make requests, not demands, of your spouse
Don’t make accusations
Use “I” statements to explain how you’re feeling
Don’t hold onto past issues

Nurture your relationship: Many times, couples start to take one another and their union for granted. But, just like any living thing, marriage needs attention and care if it is going to grow. This means taking the time to talk with your spouse about areas of the relationship you aren’t pleased with and making an effort toward improvements. In order to strengthen the nurturing aspect of their marriage, this is the point where many couples turn to counseling.

Keep up date nights: Yes, you both sat on the couch and watched the 11 o’clock news together last night, but that does not qualify as a date. Neither does the car ride you took to the home improvement store last weekend. Just because you don’t feel the constant need to impress one another anymore, and you likely see each other every day, doesn’t mean you don’t need a night out once in awhile. Some of the longest lasting couples still schedule time alone. The responsibility of preparing for the date can be alternated. This week look around for things your spouse really likes, maybe tickets to see a certain sports team, or to movie in the theater that has their favorite actor in it, and surprise him. Then, the next week, it is his turn to surprise you. The constant exchange will help add excitement to the week and offers another way to show your appreciation for one another.

divorce tips

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Divorce- Any help, info or tips, that could help. Feeling so alone and left in the dark about so many … ?

things, I would appreciate any advice you would be able to share with me. I am finding out little things that leave me uneasy and betrayed. When calling lawyers I found that a consultation is 150.00 for the first hour. yikes !!!!

save your $ for the divorce. Do you have kids? Go to a mediator. It’ll cost about $600 w/o kids $3500 with kids (at least here in NYC) and then dont worry about the details. If you really want a divorce, focus on the bright future ahead and not those bad details that you didn’t like or made this marriage not work in the first place. Dont give up, you’ll be stronger after.

It is common for couples not to see eye to eye and have squabbles now and then. However, when the word “let’s get a divorce” is angrily spat out by either party, it could be merely out of anger or heat of the moment. So if you cherish your family and kids, and still love your partner no matter how angry or frustrated you are, then it is time to save your marriage to stop the downward spiral which may lead to an unwanted divorce and a broken family. This is the time when both of you need to go for a marriage counseling therapy.

Marriage counseling is the last thing couples want to go through though. But if it can save your marriage from breaking up, then it is well worth it. So how to look for a good marriage counselor? Let’s find out with this article.

I must emphasise that it is of utmost importance to find a marriage counselor whom both of you like and able to feel comfortable with. After you’ve called or interviewed the counselor, ask yourself these questions:-

i) Does the marriage counselor seem interested in you? Use your intuition to feel his/her level of empathy.

ii) Does he/her ask you and your partner questions to get enough significant information about your marriage?

A good marriage couselor will create an environment where both of you and the counselor can feel safe and comfortable to discuss any issues no matter how embarrassing these issues may be.

Then you will need to check on the experience and track record of your potential marriage counselor. Ask to see his or her training qualifications and success rate in helping couples to successfully to save their marriages.

Ask him/her to provide referrals who have succesfully saved their marriages and those who failed and call these referrals to ascertain the professionalism of your potential counselor. Do not be shy about this because if the counseling fails, you will be looking starkly at the prospect of an ugly divorce.

For this reason, find a counselor who has been in practise for several years and who counsels at least six or seven couples per week. It is vital to find a counselor who is truly a couple’s therapist and not merely a counselor trained to work with individuals who happens to see couples. This is because there is a risk that the therapist will treat individual unhappiness and not effectively address the couple’s specific issues.

This may be common sense, but in the fit of an emotional trauma and anger may be overlooked. Do find a counselor who is affordable and geographically convenient. Otherwise, either you or your spouse may come up with excuses like “we can’t afford it” or “it is to much of a hassle” to derail the progress you can make to save your marriage.

Now, make sure that your therapist believes in the institution of marriage. You may not know this, but some marriage counselors actually may tell you that divorce is the best option and helps you to facilitate divorce proceedings such as introducing you to divorce lawyers and then counsel you on the emotional traumas of a divorce. These are divorce counselors, not marriage couselors wherein he/she helps the couple to separate rather than stay together.

So if facilitating a divorce is not your goal and barring incidents like repeated illicit affairs, drug or alcohol abuse and or domestic violence etc, then it is certainly prudent to make sure that you see a marriage counselor who believes in the making the marriage intact.

If you or your spouse have a special problem, then go to a specialist in that field instead of a general practitioner marriage counselor. Such issues could be drug or alcohol abuse, sex addiction or domestic violence just to name a few examples. Thus the counselor that you choose must be skilled in addressing these issues.

Many counselors often choose a niche that they are passionate about and thus you can benefit from their additional knowledge and training in those specific niches.

So if you really want to save your marriage and believes that divorcing your spouse is the last option, then finding a good marriage counselor and going for marriage counseling may just save your marriage.

I need Christian answers on how normal it is for a guy to freak out about getting married when he’s engaged?

My fiance and I have been engaged for a month, we are both dedicated Christians and decided to set the date for Nov 29th of this year. He told me that he knew without a doubt that I was the one he wanted to marry. Now recently he told me he was having doubts and worries about knowing for sure this is what he wants to do. He told me he has 3 fears and they are that he might mess up, that we will disagree a lot, and that he doesn’t want to go through that stage of discontent after we are married. We have scheduled Christian marriage counseling before we get married and have not started them yet. When he told me he was having doubts I freaked out and am worried he will leave me. How normal is it for a guy to worry about this?

These concerns would be – and are – common in both genders across religious lines.

It’s good that you will be going through some counseling before the wedding, but if he’s telling you this now, you might want to start talking to him about it now. I’m sure you have some fears about being a good wife as well. You can share those with him in a constructive way and let him know that the two of you and your religious leader, along with God, of course, have the ability to work through anything.

If your husband-to-be is open to counseling and talking about his doubts and fears now, there is a good chance he will be after the wedding as well. Keeping the lines of communication open and bringing in a supportive, non-judgemental, non-emotionally involved third party can be a good thing when troubles arise in a marriage.

I definitely say talk to your soon-to-be now and see if you can help calm each others fears. If necessary, bring your religious leader into the discussion before couseling or ask if you can begin counseling sooner than expected. But, perhaps more than anything, do not go through with something that either of you has doubts about. Going into a marriage uncertain or scared is no way to start off. Neither of you wants to feel pressured or trapped because it opens too many possibilities for blaming the other and for trying to get out of the marriage later.

Good Luck!!
