marriage advice

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The honeymoon stage, marital bliss and newlyweds are all words to describe you and your first year of marriage. While the words conjure up images of simplicity, passion and possibly choirs singing in the background, the truth about the first year of marriage comes as quite a shock to many “lovebirds.” According to information collected by the US Census Bureau, the median age of a woman at their first divorce is 29, for men it is 30.5. The Bureau also reports that the average number of years a marriage lasts in the United States is 7.8.

This by no means is meant to suggest that your marriage is doomed. But, many couples are not prepared for what is in store for them. When people are young, they have the illusion that the love they share with their husband or wife is stronger than the love of couples who have come before them. But, regardless of how strong you feel your love is, marriage still takes work.

Here is what you can expect in your first year of marriage, and advice for how you can keep your bond strong.

Expect change: Natural changes always happen in any relationship. It is just a matter of being prepared for them. For example, if you have never lived with your spouse prior to being married, then you might discover new things about him that you are unaccustomed to. Does he leave his clothes on the floor, or dishes in the sink? These are just small nuisances to expect. But these minor annoyances can be dealt with quickly as long as you make an effort to bring them up in a calm and noncritical way.

There may also be emotional changes as well. Now that you are no longer in the courting stage of your relationship, you may find that your partner is less vocal about his admiration for you. It doesn’t mean that he loves you any less, but perhaps he expects that you know already how much he cares for you. Often couples in counseling discuss their love languages to discover the many ways that they both express love, and how they prefer to receive love.

Work on communication skills: It is stressed to couples that communication is key to creating a strong marriage. But, communication is about more than expressing all of your feelings. You should also work on your communication style:
Watch your tone of voice
Make requests, not demands, of your spouse
Don’t make accusations
Use “I” statements to explain how you’re feeling
Don’t hold onto past issues

Nurture your relationship: Many times, couples start to take one another and their union for granted. But, just like any living thing, marriage needs attention and care if it is going to grow. This means taking the time to talk with your spouse about areas of the relationship you aren’t pleased with and making an effort toward improvements. In order to strengthen the nurturing aspect of their marriage, this is the point where many couples turn to counseling.

Keep up date nights: Yes, you both sat on the couch and watched the 11 o’clock news together last night, but that does not qualify as a date. Neither does the car ride you took to the home improvement store last weekend. Just because you don’t feel the constant need to impress one another anymore, and you likely see each other every day, doesn’t mean you don’t need a night out once in awhile. Some of the longest lasting couples still schedule time alone. The responsibility of preparing for the date can be alternated. This week look around for things your spouse really likes, maybe tickets to see a certain sports team, or to movie in the theater that has their favorite actor in it, and surprise him. Then, the next week, it is his turn to surprise you. The constant exchange will help add excitement to the week and offers another way to show your appreciation for one another.

Dress up, spruce up, and be on the alert. Don’t wait too long to get one much more perfect than you are; but settle on some one soon. So far as the record is preserved, unchastity has contributed above all other causes, more to the ruin and exhaustion and demoralization of the race than all other wickedness. Any presentation to a lady in a public ballroom, for the mere purpose of dancing, does not entitle you to claim her acquaintance afterwards. These sage words of advice on courtship, marriage and sex in Victorian society are often hilarious a hundred years later. Wry and witty, these pearls of wisdom from days gone-by show how times change – and people don’t.

Marriage Advice for a Pope: John XXII and the Power to Dissolve

Marriage Advice for a Pope: John XXII and the Power to Dissolve

$115.62

The Medieval Church taught that marriage was indissoluble and that consent was the key. Why then could a marriage be dissolved by one spouse joining a religious order after an exchange of consent but before consummation? This question vexed Thirteenth-century academics and, in the fourteenth century, Pope John XXII asked a group of leading theologians and lawyers to study the issue. Position-papers were produced to explain the exception to the rule of indissolubility for chaste monks and nuns, and to explore whether the pope had the power to extend it to celibate priests and deacons. These texts, edited here, were used by John XXII to draft his bull Antique Concertationi (1322). This study reconstructs the story behind the constitution, providing a unique insight into the decision-making process at the Roman curia in Avignon under a controversial pope. This book reconstructs the scholastic arguments about marital indissolubility and papal power that lay behind John XXIIa (TM)s 1322 constitution Antique Concertationi. It illustrates the dynamic relationship between canon law and theology, and the tensions between papal authority and academic expertise, that animated a controversial pontificate

Imagine the worst that could happen – the atomic wars in the 21st Century. 200 years after the wars, a Grandfather gives advice to his grandson on the Christian ideals and formulas that allowed a group of Christians and Jews to survive. He also gives the early warnings for the atomic wars, which were sent out by the ancestral grandfather before the start of the wars. The warnings are for any parent who is concerned about the interaction of Judeo-Christian beliefs and secular politics. The warnings are about the waning of Judeo-Christian beliefs and the rise of secular humanism and moral relativism, which lead to the potential for nuclear war between the Muslim nations and western nations. The book gives hope that with Christian beliefs and practices, the true Christian believers will be saved. This book contains the writings of an elderly man living in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born in 1945, at the end of WWII. He graduated from University of Dayton with Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, and study in philosophy, theology and psychology. He had failures in marriage, which sent him searching for the correct outlook on life. While searching, he spent 30 years in the property casualty Insurance business helping people to resolve their problems. He was robbed of his natural children by abortion. Then, at the age of 55, God rewarded him with a step-grandson. He started writing advice to the Step Grand-Son based on Christian ideals. It is hoped that these writings will help move young people toward the proper value system to keep the greatness of America going forward, and, as an apocalyptic warning of the dire consequences of secular liberal thinking.

favor of and against covenant marriage?

describe the arguments on favor of and against covenant marriage. which side do you agree with?

covenant marriage–> a fairly new type of legal marriage in which the bride and groom agree to be bound by a marriage covenant that makes divorce difficult.

i need what you think…thanks

The arguments for and against covenant marriage are found also at http://www.divorcereform.org/cov.html
And reproduced further down below. If it appears garbled, drop me a line at bel_loo@yahoo.com
and I can email it to you. The listed pros and cons have some points but this con “As covenant marriage is essentially a religious concept, this proposal infringes the separation of church and state” is wrong. An analysis of the modern need for modern covenant marriage is obtained at http://marriageandfamilies.byu.edu/issues/2000/August/consumer.aspx by William J. Doherty is a professor of family social science and Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota. …. “We need a new ideal of marriage that re-emphasizes the commitment and responsibility of the Institutional Marriage while embracing emotional satisfaction elements of the Psychological Marriage and the self-advocacy elements of the Consumer Marriage. We need an ideal of marriage that fosters commitment and individual well-being, both permanence and equality between men and women. An ideal that accepts divorce but sees it as the tragic exception and not the norm. I call this Modern Covenant Marriage “covenant” to connote the religious sense that marriage is a powerful, sacred commitment, and “modern” to suggest that we need a new way to be in committed marriages in the twenty-first century. This form of marriage is similar to, but more than, Covenant Marriage legislation passed in Louisiana and Arizona and proposed in other states.”

I think marriage is a lifelong commitment and only then, can parties singly and jointly delve into the deeper meaning of life and purpose of life, and more importantly, it has a social imperative of securing social order and enhancing it, for the advancement of the people.

ProsCons

Covenant marriage might reduce the number of domestic violence cases. A 1991 Justice Department study concluded that current husbands/fathers account for only 9% of the cases of domestic abuse. The rest of the abuse was perpetrated by former husbands, boyfriends or transient partners. Without divorce, women may be less likely to be involved with abusive men.In a covenant marriage, a partner must prove that abuse actually occurred to be permitted to end the marriage. This especially worries advocates for battered women who say that proving domestic abuse can be difficult and the waiting period makes women stay in abusive relationships longer. In addition, mental abuse is not seen as a legitimate reason to end a marriage.

In a covenant marriage, the offended spouse is the only one who can ask for the divorce. This gives the offended spouse many benefits in negotiating the end of the marriage. A women clearly has more to lose in assuming a marriage will last forever, especially if she puts her career on hold to care for children. A covenant marriage is a way for women to have more security in marriage. Religious belief is only one reason to want marriages to succeed; society as a while has an interest in stable families. Advocates for covenant marriage, Amitai Etzioni, founder and director of the Washington-based Communitarian Network, says, “One can be deeply concerned with strengthening the commitment of marriage without favouring traditional or hierarchical forms of marriages or denying women full equal standing.”Some feminists feel initiatives for covenant marriage simply conceal the hidden agenda of the antifeminist Moral Majority. Liberal commentator Katha Pollitt, a columnist for The Nation, says covenant marriages “enforce a narrow and moralistic vision of marriage by rendering divorce more painful and more punitive.” Many advocates of covenant marriage laws are self-described conservative Christians; religious groups are major supporters of covenant marriage laws. Louisiana NOW President Terry O’Neill points out that “’Covenant’ and ‘covenant marriage’ are terms with a very specific meaning in the Christian community.” Conflating religious values with secular laws on marriage is wrong.

The premarital counselling by a trained counsellor that is a requirement of covenant marriage enables the future husband and wife to get to know each other well. Issues such as how to raise children, how to split housework, and financial matters are discussed and explored with the counsellor. Covenant marriage are more restrictive but allows for divorce in specific circumstances: adultery; physical or sexual abuse of a spouse or child; abandonment of at least one year; incarceration of a spouse for a felony conviction; spouses living separate and apart for two years; and a legal separation of one year, or 18 months if a minor child is involved. If partners enter a covenant marriage, they would not be able to divorce until they are separated for at least two years. People could get stuck in marriages and be unable to contin

The thesis of this book is that God intends that sexual intercourse should be at least implicitly a renewal of the marriage covenant. From this it follows that the marriage covenant provides the criterion to evaluate the morality of every sexual act. Thus the title, Sex and the Marriage Covenant , is an appropriate description of the book’s contents. Marriage comes into being by a couple unreservedly entering God’s covenant of marriage; contraceptive intercourse contradicts the very essence of the marriage covenant. From these considerations, Kippley developed the covenant theology of sexuality described in this book. ”???I should say that my wife and I, while still Protestants, found the first edition of this work to be so luminous and compelling as to help change our minds on the matter of contraception.???’ ‘ “Scott Hahn, Author, Rome Sweet Home’ ‘ ””A veritable mine of information, Sex and the Marriage Covenant is must reading for anyone concerned with marriage, sexuality, and the family.”” “William E. May, Author, Marriage: The Rock on Which the Family is Built’ ‘ ‘ John F. Kippley has been active in the family planning movement since 1968 and co-authored The Art of Natural Family Planning with his wife, Sheila.” ”””I met you guys [John and Sheila Kippley] at the elevator and then you were so kind to sign my copy of your book Sex and the Marriage Covenant . I just wanted to take the chance to thank you again for such a terrific job you both do, you are a truly inspiring couple for those of us younger single ones who hope one day to get married. Your ministry is truly a blessing of the Spirit not only for the Church, but for every human being, I think that book should be read by every high school kid. I think you should be required to read it before getting married! It was really amazing for me to get to meet you personally guys, I consider it a blessing! Keep up the good work!” ”Sincerely, Rafael Piaa , Coming Home Network , Guadalajara, Mexico”

The doctrine of covenant has (re)emerged in a number of contemporary Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Islamic circles as a common trope to map and measure the spiritual dimensions of the marital union. The doctrine of covenant has also reemerged separately in a number of American states as a convenient means of strengthening the legal rules of marital formation and dissolution. This volume brings together jurists and theologians from each of these religious traditions in an effort to integrate and elaborate this covenant theology and law of marriage, as well as its essential contractual dimensions.

What makes a model father murder his estranged wife, then go on TV pleading for her to come home? How does a devoted wife and mother walk into a beauty salon and shoot her ex-husband’s pregnant lover in cold blood? No one ever knows what really goes on behind the closed doors of a marriage in freefall. The people in this book weren’t born evil, but in the heat of a relationship break-up, all restraint melted and violent passions spiraled out of control. The most basic of emotions are involved in these stories of spouses who have gone to extreme lengths to rid themselves of their partners.

Solving Marriage Problems: Biblical Solutions for Christian Counselors

Solving Marriage Problems: Biblical Solutions for Christian Counselors

$5.5

This is a book to help counselors understand and deal with typical problems that arise in a marriage by offering biblical solutions.’Counselors unanimously find that marriage and family problems outnumber all other counseling problems combined. For that reason alone, counselors should want to learn all they can about marriage counseling.’ —Jay Adams This book will help counselors understand and deal with the typical problems that arise in a marriage. The approach is to offer not merely solutions, but biblical solutions. Chapter by chapter, each problem that is brought into focus is addressed by Scripture, and a solution arising from Scripture is developed. Unless one understands what a biblical marriage is supposed to be, it is difficult to solve marriage problems. For that reason, Dr. Adams spends the first few chapters developing a biblical model. Then he treats many of the specific kinds of problems that typically arise: life patterns, priorities, children, sex roles, in-laws, and so forth. This is a book that belongs on every pastor’s and every counselor’s shelf.

MARRIAGE & FAMILY IMPROVEMENT

MARRIAGE & FAMILY IMPROVEMENT

Is your marriage and family in need of improvement? There is hope and help for every hurting heart. The author gives simple and powerful hints in improving the marital relationship and building a stronger family. He presents the importance of a Christ-centered attitude, seven C’s for a healthy relationship, and other techniques for improving and maintaining a healthy and lasting marriage. The road to a stronger family is under construction. We know that hands may build a house, but hearts filled with the love of Christ build a home. My prayer is that this small book will have a big impact on the family. Emanuel is a professional Christian counselor who believes that our problems are not bigger than God, but that God is bigger than our family problems. Emanuel ‘Viv’ John is an experienced Christian counselor who has provided counseling services at Hospitals and at his office. He has four Degrees, and is licensed by the State of Florida as a Clinical Social Worker. He is a Diplomat in Clinical Social Work, and is a chartered member of the American Association of Christian Counselors. He is now a full time servant of the Lord with a passionate love for the Lord, families, and precious souls. He has written the book "Resolving Family Conflicts – How to Prevent Breakdowns and Breakups." He has also written several articles, and conducted family seminars. Emanuel and his wife Pamela live in Florida, and have a daughter Abigail who is now residing in California.

Case Studies in Marriage and Family Therapy

Case Studies in Marriage and Family Therapy

$20.5

PB/BThe authors believe that prospective counselors must learn from the experience of practicing counselors. This enjoyable-to-read, inexpensive casebook offers nineteen live marriage and family therapy case studies that exemplify the major approaches taken to marriage and family counseling.B/BThe nineteen contributors provide real-life data about their counseling sessions, their decision-making process, their personal feelings, and even their mistakes. A common organization for each case study features: the problem, the diagnosis, goals, strategies, session-by-session accounts, results, and a “post-mortem.” It is telling that the contributing authors have provided the case that touched them most, not their most successful case.B/BFor future counselors, therapists, and social workers./PPFor this, the second edition, I have three new contributors. Montserrat Casado tells the story of an immigrant family, and Bibiana Gutierrez introduces us to a lesbian relationship. Albert Valadez’s case is noteworthy for its powerful use of metaphor./PPI have a word about the state of practice, especially my own 25-year practice. In the years since I started in the glory fee-for-service days of the late 1970s, the working environment of counselors has been transformed by harsh economic conditions. The number of outpatient sessions and the length-of-stay of patients in psychiatric hospitals have declined, as have private practice fees./PPI think that marriage and family therapy is adapting successfully in the marketplace because it is inherently cost-efficient. When you treat the system, you get results. For me efficient therapy doesn’t specify a particular counseling approach (although there are certain methods, notably cognitive-behavior therapy, that are supported by efficacy research). Instead, efficient therapy is characterized by a particular bias: the counselor provides the minimum assistance necessary to alleviate the presenting symptoms@4€

Marriage Builder: A Blueprint for Couples and Counselors

Marriage Builder: A Blueprint for Couples and Counselors

$7.16

Psychologist Larry Crabb cuts to the heart of the biblical view of marriage: the one-flesh relationship. He argues convincingly that the deepest needs of human personality — security and significance — ultimately cannot be satisfied by a marriage partner. We need to turn to the Lord, rather than our spouse, to satisfy our needs. This frees both partners for soul oneness, a commitment to minister to our spouse’s needs rather than manipulating them to meet our own needs. With soul oneness comes renewed body oneness, where couples enjoy sexual pleasure as an expression and outgrowth of a personal relationship. The Marriage Builder also identifies three building blocks essential to constructing marriage: the grace of God, true marriage commitment, and acceptance of one’s mate. Now for the first time, discussion questions have been added to aid couples who want to come to deeper understanding of marriage. Helpful to counselors and laypersons alike, The Marriage Builder is for anyone who longs to transform marriage from trial to triumph.

mediation for divorce

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Vallejo divorce mediation is a civil way to get divorced. Vallejo Divorce Mediation relatively inexpensive, painless and quick. I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that it’s free and painless. But you can have it done in a day and it will only cost you a few hundred bucks. Considering the cost of a contested divorce, it’s a good idea (if you and your spouse are still on speaking terms). In Vallejo, divorce mediation and other types of Alternative Dispute Resolution, are growing in popularity. And for good reason I think. Who want’s to give lawyers tens of thousands of dollars?

Generally, Vallejo divorce mediation is between you, your spouce and a neutral third party. Here’s what happens:

– You and your spouse give your offer for resolving the dispute to an appointed or agreed upon third party.

– This person is usually an attorney with many years experience in family law.

– She will decide the outcome of the dispute for the parties in lieu of court action.

There might be a bit of yelling between you and your spouse, but for the most part, it’s all pretty civil. Courts like it to. They find that the solution that you and your partner work out is better than the one that they decide on. So go on, talk to a Vallejo divorce mediation lawer about it.

Talk to several Vallejo divorce mediation lawyers. They’re smart people. And they’re not just after your money. Trust me on this – if they were, they’d be in commercial law advising hedge funds. They’re here to help you. And they might be able to find a good, economical solution that works for you and your partner.

Vallejo divorce mediation means that the parties attempt to negotiate a resolution through the help of a third party neutral family law attorney or other mediator. This Vallejo divorce mediator assists the parties in making agreements in light of the relevant law. It doesn’t work for every case, but when possible, Vallejo divorce mediation is usually the best option.

If Vallejo Divorce Mediation is required, it can be completed instead of going to court. If Vallejo divorce mediation fails, then you and your spouse may find yourselves in court.

What happens if I’m not happy with the Vallejo divorce mediation Decision?

There are special rules involved in appeals of the decision made by Vallejo divorce mediation. So, don’t worry about this yet. If your unhappy with the results you do have recourse. Talk to a lawyer experienced with Vallejo divorce mediation. They can help.

Vallejo divorce attorneys can help you figure out how to settle your case in the most efficient manner possible. They understand that the way to building a thriving practice is to actually help people. Each Vallejo divorce attorney that we work with explores the possibilities of mediation. Vallejo divorce mediation might not work for you, but at a cost of under $1,000 for a divorce, Vallejo Divorce Mediation is certainly worth looking into.

In recent years, the use of Vallejo divorce mediation has increased. People are realizing that they probably would be well served to not each spend over $10,000 on a divorce. That’s where Vallejo divorce mediation can help. Also, courts have shown a preference for resolving disputes outside of court. Courts also prefer Vallejo divorce mediation. It’s easier for them, and better for you.

Vallejo divorce mediation decisions are on the rise. having attorneys, judges, and parties spending a day in court is very inefficient and costly. Also, parties generally abide by Vallejo divorce mediation agreements more closely than by court decisions. Vallejo divorce mediation encourages overall harmony. I generally don’t like to give advice to people I’ve never met, but try Vallejo divorce mediation before fighting in court. My parents started figting over their house in court. They realized that if they kept fighting, the legal fees would be almost as much as the house was worth. They switched to Vallejo divorce mediation. It worked really well. Give it a go. At the very least, fill out our contact form and talk to a Vallejo divorce mediation attorney.

Pioneered in the late 1970s by Gary Friedman and other California attorneys, mediation has boomed to become the preferred alternative to standard divorce practice. Mediation is sane, economical, fair, and legal, an innovative process that is the last act of partnership between a married couple. In A GUIDE TO DIVORCE MEDIATION, Mr. Friedman lists four criteria necessary for every couple about to enter into mediation: motivation to mediate, self-responsibility, willingness to disagree, and willingness to agree. He explains the ground rules, the legal ramifications, and where to find a mediator. Also included are 12 detailed case studies to show how in almost all instances mediation has succeeded with a variety of personalities and situations.

The purpose of the first part of the book is to define and examine the assumptions implicit in the view of divorce mediation expressed in this book, as well as to question some of those that inform mediation practice, as well as adversarial practice. The second is to take the practitioner through a complete mediation, and while intended for the experience mediator as well as for the beginner, it nevertheless assumes that the practitioner is about to conduct his first mediation.

Divorce Mediation: Theory and Practice

Divorce Mediation: Theory and Practice

DIVAlthough divorce is essentially a matter of personal choice, its emotional aspects are necessarily entwined with legal dynamics, making decisions about divorce a matter of both the heart and the law. Consequently, feelings become facts that must be accommodated in the divorce process in order to reach a viable lasting result. Divorce mediation, an alternative to traditional judicial intervention and third-party decision making, facilitates private negotiation and takes into account emotional as well as legal dimensions of marital dissolution. This process empowers divorcing couples to be actively involved in making the choices that will affect their lives for years to come. The divorce mediator acts as a neutral party who promotes decision making with the family and helps divorcing couples to develop their own parental, financial, and property arrangements.brbrBecause divorce mediation views divorce as a multidimensional process that involves both legal and psychological matters, it has attracted professionals from both fields who wish to facilitate a less adversarial approach to the dissolution of a marriage. DIVORCE MEDIATION: THEORY AND PRACTICE fills the currently unmet need for a comprehensive treatment of this burgeoning field. Editors Folberg and Milne, both nationally recognized authorities, have compiled an interdisciplinary state-of-the-art work on divorce resolution. Leading practitioners have contributed chapters which define the theory of divorce mediation, and outline techniques and strategies, as well as ethical considerations and constraints, standards of practice, and policy issues. Current results and forthcoming research findings on such important and controversial matters such as mediation’s role in domestic violence disputes are also included.brbrThe volume opens with a lucid discussion of theory and practice, the nature of divorce disputes, and methods for achieving settlements. It goes on to offer a detailed overview of the psych@¸Që…¸ÿ¾Úx

Following the death of one of their children, David Bell and his wife’s marriage fell apart. They decided to divorce amicably, but as the divorce process progressed, it slowly took on a life of its own and spiraled out of control. During this period, David sought out and read most of the books currently available on divorce. After this study, he realized that there was no one unbiased book of simple, sound, practical advice on the process and its many legal and mental pitfalls and the healing period that must follow. In researching Divorce, David compiled through consensus the best advice of legal, mental health, and child-rearing experts whose books he had read. He put this information together with many divorce sagas — good and bad — that he gathered from divorced acquaintances and wrote the book of advice that he wished he had been privy to before he began his own lengthy, costly, and mentally trying divorce. Divorce: Making the Break carefully and compassionately tours the divorce process from the very first considerations one has when contemplating divorce through getting back on one’s feet once the divorce is completed. Along the way, the reader is advised about ways of controlling anger and not demonizing the divorcing partner; putting the concerns of children first; avoiding destructive, warring attitudes; equitably dealing with child custody matters; choosing a divorce forum (mediation or litigation); finding good, honorable legal representation; working with judges and accountants; and putting personal lives back together after the trauma of divorce. A thorough yet tidy handbook made up of many small sections that can be easily digested during a time a crisis, when one’s mental attention may not be at its most acute, Divorce will guide both husbands and wives to a dissolution of marriage that is as peaceable and constructive as possible.

Renegotiating Family Relationships: Divorce, Child Custody, and Mediation

Renegotiating Family Relationships: Divorce, Child Custody, and Mediation

$39

The way in which relationships are renegotiated in the aftermath of divorce is critical to the future well-being of family members. When estranged parents are able to redefine boundaries in their own relationship, it allows their children to maintain a healthy relationship with both, and paves the way for a more intact and functional family system. Toward this end, the author presents a state-of-the-art overview of divorce, child custody, and mediation within the context of the latest psychological research and contemporary divorce law. Providing specific techniques and detailed case histories, he outlines an approach for estranged couples to renegotiate their relationship, defining new boundaries of intimacy and power between the various members of the family. The book illustrates how mediation can keep a large percentage of families out of court, increase parents’ satisfaction with the process, encourage the involvement of both parents with the children, and break out of the win-lose mentality of the law and negotiate win-win settlements instead. Renegotiating Family Relationships opens with an examination of how gender bears on the attitudes both parents and children maintain toward divorce. It describes specific steps for separating marital and parental roles, as well as for dealing with cycles of love, anger, and sadness that characterize grief in divorce. The role of children in a divorced family system is explored, and strategies are provided for setting up visitation schedules, disciplinary tactics, joint physical custody, and other parenting arrangements. Ways to balance loyalties and alliances in the parent-child-parent triad are also discussed. Divorce andcustody law and the implications they have for mediation are examined, with sections discussing such issues as financial settlements, property division, alimony, child support, taxes, remarriage, and post-divorce economics for single mothers. Theories of custody dispute resolution and tactics for bargaining and settling disputes are also presented, as are methods for negotiating agreements, including ways to determine settlement policies, and conduct mediation sessions with parents. Offering strategies for working with attorneys and judges, the book describes how to define problems; set up caucuses; focus on issues instead of emotions; and review areas of agreement and disagreement. Later chapters focus on custody mediation research and psychological research on children, parents, and divorce with an examination of precedent-setting mediation cases, issues of compliance, demographics of divorce, and how both children and parents adjust to the divorce process in light of changes in the family structure. Finally, the future of custody mediation is also discussed. Comprehensive in scope, this volume will interest a wide range of mental health professionals–psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and family counselors. It will inform legal professionals workin
